Students will study survival stories and decide what characteristics, personality traits, and outlooks different survivors have in common. The focus is on people who overcome tragic events and overwhelming odds and then use their talents and skills to help others or make the world a better place. They will explore the conventions of films by watching either a documentary about the Lost Boys of Sudan or Bethany Hamilton (Soul Surfer) and compare the differences in how stories are told through film versus articles about the events. Emphasis on the language we use to share stories of events, putting things in logical or chronological orders, and to convey emotions.
