This unit offers a wide range of choices for students to select from regarding the genres of art they want to examine and share to the angles they want to consider. The primary texts focus on the power of art to ignite social change. However, much of the unit should be student-led as their inquiry into their own artistic interests. Over the years my students have selected: propaganda and social impact, tattoos as cultural legacies, graffiti as the voice of the unheard, and many other angles. The more you allow students to lead the inquiry and journey, the more invested they become and the more interesting the unit becomes for everyone, teachers included!
